How do you rank on Yandex?

yandex_search_engine

Yandex Search Engine

Yandex, or Языково́й as I like to call it, is a Russian search engine that ranks as the 8th biggest search engine around.  It’s big in Russia and as of Wednesday (19th May) it’s been launched to the English speaking world, to some acclaim from within the SEO industry.

It certainly seems to have caught Rand Fishkin’s attention who has been positively tweeting:

“Been playing w/ http://www.yandex.com/  at Distilled’s office. Our consensus: better than Bing, sometimes better than Google. Wow.”

“I keep searching on http://www.yandex.com and keep being impressed. Can’t believe how relevant, spam-free and useful their results are.”

“For SEOs, Yandex search may be a very valuable additional data point around relevancy/trust/authority. I need to write a blog post.”

“Even weird queries like http://j.mp/aRoPZm and http://j.mp/9k5T6k are impressive. Can’t complain about their results for “SEO” either :-)”

I suppose we better take note, or at least a look at what the fuss is about and find out how we got about getting our sites ranking highly on this new engine.

http://www.yandex.com/

One less button than Google I see.

First of all, I suppose it’s a question of what “better” search results mean to you.   I tried the following query for starters: “SEO”

Yandex search for SEO
Google search for SEO
Bing search for SEO

In each case, I got the Wikipedia entry followed by a series of SEO companies.  The obvious thing you will note is that of Yandex’s page 1 entries, 8 out of 10 feature SEO or Search Engine Optimisation in the URL, compared to Google’s 4.  Bing is pretty much the same as Yandex with 8/10 but noticeably their results are UK based as opposed to Yandex’s global results.

Next up, “car insurance”:

Yandex search for car insurance
Google search for car insurance
Bing search for car insurance

Again, Yandex goes global and leans heavily towards keyword rich domains, whilst Bing and Google return the big UK brands in this niche.

For me, these results would not suggest that Yandex is “better” than either Google or Bing, but then again, the search terms are better for a “local” audience than a global one.

Interestingly, if you follow the about Yandex link on the home page, it would seem they position themselves more as a rival to Ask Jeeves than Google or Bing.

1. What Yandex Does

Give answers

Our major goal is to give answers to users’ questions.

Questions can be explicit or implicit. Explicit questions are typed right in Yandex’s search box and return answers to users in the form of search results. To answer implicit questions like “what is the weather like today”, “is there anything important going on now”, “can I drive downtown without traffic jams” Yandex offers its users specialized information services.”

Fair to say, it’s a dead heat.  Though out of all the results returned, Yandex’s no.9 is pretty good if you’re into that sort of thing: – http://whatisthecapital.com/

Thinking implicitly, I asked “where did I leave my pen”. The results were not great.  Yandex was the only one who didn’t rank the Facebook group dedicated to the age old question.  With 324,696 fans it’s probably as relevant as you’re going to get.

Even the Yandex suggestion of “is there anything important going on now” returns nothing of note,  it’s own page with the exact text match comes in at 6.

No doubt the usual suspects of links and content will come into play but I’m pretty sure from the queries performed that Yandex is bias toward keyword rich domains, page names and URLs.   This would undoubtedly favour keyword rich spammy URLs, obviously more research is needed but that to me is not better than any search engine currently out there.

A preview for PC experts

Windows Technical Preview is here today, but it’s a long way from done. We’re going to make it faster, better, more fun at parties…you get the idea. Join the Windows Insider Program to make sure you get all the new features that are on the way. If you’re okay with a moving target and don’t want to miss out on the latest stuff, keep reading. Technical Preview could be just your thing.

Download and install the preview only if you

  • Want to try out software that’s still in development and like sharing your opinion about it.

  • Don’t mind lots of updates or a UI design that might change significantly over time.

  • Really know your way around a PC and feel comfortable troubleshooting problems, backing up data, formatting a hard drive, installing an operating system from scratch, or restoring your old one if necessary.

  • Know what an ISO file is and how to use it.

  • Aren’t installing it on your everyday computer.

We’re not kidding about the expert thing. So if you think BIOS is a new plant-based fuel, Tech Preview may not be right for you.

Things to keep in mind

Unexpected PC crashes could damage or even delete your files, so you should back up everything. Some printers and other hardware might not work, and some software might not install or work correctly, including antivirus or security programs. You might also have trouble connecting to home or corporate networks.

Also, if your PC runs into problems, Microsoft will likely examine your system files. If the privacy of your system files is a concern, consider using a different PC. For more info, read our privacy statement.

What does it work with?

Technical Preview should work with the same devices and programs that work with Windows 8.1, but you might need to update or reinstall some of them.

Drivers for basic functions like storage, networking, input, and display come with Windows. These drivers allow you to complete the Windows installation and connect to the Internet. You might be able to get more drivers from Windows Update.

For compatibility info, see the Windows 8.1 Compatibility Center.

If you use a mouse and keyboard

Your apps and devices should work as expected, though of course there will be exceptions. We’d love to know what you think about how the new Windows works with mouse and keyboard and whether it provides the best of new and familiar functionality for Windows and apps.

If you have a touch PC

Technical Preview works with touch, but some things will be rough and unfinished. More touch-friendly improvements are on the way. In the meantime, let us know what it’s like to interact with Windows and apps in the preview.

If you want to go back to your previous operating system

You’ll need to reinstall your version of Windows from the recovery or installation media that came with your PC (typically DVD media). If you don’t have recovery media:

  • For Windows 7 or Windows Vista: Before you update, you might be able to create recovery media from a recovery partition on your PC using software provided by your PC manufacturer. Check the support section of your PC manufacturer’s website for more info.

  • For Windows 8.1 or Windows 8: You might be able to create a USB recovery drive. For more info, see Create a USB recovery drive. If you didn’t create a USB recovery drive before you installed the preview, you can create installation media forWindows 8.1.

2015 Planning: What Does Your SEO Strategy in Next Year?

SEO,網絡宣傳,facebook宣傳,網頁管理

seo

Two things always start happening this time of year: We look back on everything that’s changed and we start predicting the game changers for next year.

Both are critical when you’re planning your 2015 SEO strategy, as are many other things.

It’s also about this time that things just start slowing down, both on the agency side and in-house, which finally gives you some downtime to figuring out what you want to do next instead of fighting fire after fire like you do the other 11 months of the year. So as you start your 2015 SEO plan, keep these seven things in mind to make sure you start the year off strong.

Talk to Your Stakeholders

It should be a given: The people you report to, the people who have skin in the game, should be your first outlet. What do they want to accomplish in 2015? What weren’t they happy about in 2014?

Depending on your situation, this could be your client, your client’s boss, your boss, your boss’s boss, your project marketing manager, or a combination of any of the above. Talk to as many of them as possible so you have a clear idea of where the business is heading next year.

Key questions to ask:

  • Do we have any new products or product lines being introduced?

  • What trends are happening in the industry?

  • What are the biggest sellers for each fiscal quarter?

  • What do you see your competitors doing?

  • Is there anything we’re not optimizing for that you’d like to?

Pull Your 2014 Data

One of my favorite things about the end of the year is the amount of data we have available. So many times we’re stuck saying “It’s too soon to tell…” or “I need more data before I can make an accurate assumption…” but the end of the year is the one time that doesn’t hurt us (as much).

Start with the 50,000-foot view and work your way down so you get the clear picture of what worked, what didn’t, what changed, why and, most importantly, what are going to do about it.

Key things I pull and compare against:

  • Full-site organic visits, entries, and revenue compared to all channel visits, entries, and revenue

  • Compare visits and revenue on same chart, with annotations of any site or algorithm changes

  • Organic entries, visits broken down by site category (i.e. service or product categories)

  • Organic metrics for site categories compared to all channel metrics for each site category

  • Keyword rankings and changing over the year. Map that against your organic entries

  • Organic entries, visits, and revenue segmented by traffic type compared to all channel metrics

Note the outliers: What happened to cause the dip/increase? What areas do we have for improvement, i.e. the high-traffic keywords teetering between the fifth and 10th positions?

Timing

One of the hardest things about SEO is its timing and explaining that to your stakeholders. Most non-industry folk think of SEO like any other advertising medium: Q1 is the peak time for, say, workout equipment, so that’s when they need to start promoting it to be in the consumer’s mind when they’re searching for it.

Of course, we know SEO doesn’t work like that. We need time to get things ramped up. Unfortunately — and maddeningly — there’s no magic number for how long we need, but a safe estimate is three to four months.

That means it’s already too late to optimize for Q1 objectives, and your time is better spent on planning for what your business is focusing on in later Q1 and early Q2.

Projections

Just like timing, projections are the other thing that plagues SEOs when it comes to planning, and again unlike advertising, there’s no real formula that will help us estimate how much traffic or revenue we could expect with an investment.

Click-through rate (CTR) studies help and you can use your historic metrics to estimate traffic but both methods still rely on a lot of assumptions. Keep all of this in mind when you’re sharing plans with your stakeholders, and make sure expectations are clearly set from the beginning so there are no surprises as the year unfolds.

Mobile

Every year, someone predicts the following year will be “the year of mobile,” and of course 2015 isn’t going to be any different. You’ve probably heard it as much as “content is king,” but that doesn’t make it any less true, and the reason it keeps getting said is probably because not enough people are paying attention to it.

Mobile SEO is a big freaking deal, like accounting for as much as 60 percent of online traffic kind of big deal.

This year, Google announced a user agent for mobile and debuted mobile friendly labels. With it came some changes in how your mobile site should be technically structured. There are great guides out there, but to touch the highpoints if you’re not using responsive design:

  • Do not block Googlebot from your mobile site

  • On your desktop URLs, add rel=alternate pointing to corresponding mobile URLs

  • On mobile URLs, add rel=canonical pointing to corresponding desktop URLs

  • Create a mobile XML sitemap and note it in both your mobile and desktop robots.txt file

  • Mirror your mobile URLs after your desktop URLs

Triple-Checking Your Redirects

If you work on large site where URLs have a tendency to change frequently, it’s probably not a bad idea to start the New Year by reviewing your redirect file. Has any redirected changed? Are any 404ing? If so, where is the new destination?

Hopefully, these were continually updated as any site changes happened, but lots of things come up, and it’s not uncommon for these to slip through the cracks. Too many 404s are a bad sign for Google, and you could be accidently 404ing a key traffic-driving page.

BEST RESPONSIVE WEBSITE DESIGN EXAMPLES OF 2014

Healthcare

Health Innovations Ohio

Screen Shot 2014-03-05 at 9.56.58 AM

One of the best things about this site is the navigation. Too often, sites designed for multiple generations end up taking on complex navigation schemes with multiple drop down menus across numerous areas of the screens and sometimes hidden from view. While this approach is great for certain millennial-focused websites, it can loose larger populations. Health Innovations Ohio.com uses a wonderfully simple navigation bar that even the least tech savvy can understand. The design is clean and focused while showcasing clear calls to action making the site perfect for a broader audience.

Legacy Health

Screen Shot 2014-03-05 at 10.00.38 AM

Rarely do websites translate scrolling banners into success responsive elements. Legacy Health, a Portland and Vancouver-based hospital clinic, utilized playful colors and minimalistic but powerful content that also read well on your mobile device. Need to request your medical requests, pay your bills or find where a hospital may be located? Legacy Health’s navigation makes it easy for patient’s to find the services they will need the most.

Kaiser Family Foundation

Screen Shot 2014-03-05 at 10.01.59 AM

Health information can be hard to digest but the smart folks at the Kaiser Family Foundation have made these digestible for their users. Through the use of beautiful infographics on their homepage, you can get top-line information or dig a bit deeper. We also love the “Trending on KFF” feature which highlights all the popular topics you might want to check out.

Associations

National Gay and Lesbian Chamber of Commerce (NGLCC)

NGLCC screenshot

The National Gay and Lesbian Chamber of Commerce has advocated and supported LGBT businesses for over a decade. It recently re-launched its website and I’m a big fan of the newfound combination of visual simplicity and functionality. Not only is the website fully responsive, it allows prospective businesses to complete their entire certification online, streamlining NGLCC’s main service and saving hassle for its members.

Solar Energy Industries Association

SEIA screenshot

As the Solar Energy Industries Association celebrates its 40th year in 2014, it’s amazing to see how far solar energy has come during that time. Our favorite feature is the scrollable timeline on the About page, offering a succinct history of the Association and the Solar power industry in America with sleek design.

Nonprofits

CAF America

CAFAmerica screen shot

The Charities Aid Foundation of America specializes in global grantmaking and international philanthropy but its fresh, vibrantly colored website is remarkable. The site is not only responsive but also reflects the important work CAF America performs around the world by connecting donors with hundreds of worthy causes. By offering detailed information on its ongoing programs and allowing visitors to donate easily to funds established by individuals, families and business across the globe, this website is a one-stop-shop of global giving.

Easter Seals

Easter Seals screenshot

Easter Seals offers services and support to more than a million children and adults living with autism or other disabilities in the US and Australia. Its recently relaunched website is a massive improvement on its predecessor – providing visitors with easy navigation, simple front-end design and, most importantly, detailed descriptions of Easter Seal’s numerous services for needy individuals and families.

Technology / agencies

Social Driver

Screen Shot 2014-03-05 at 10.18.18 AM

We don’t mean to toot our own horn but we are kind of in love with our latest redesign. From the animated homepage feature to the disruptive content boxes, we really think our design and development teams have helped keep our site looking fresh and clean. Great job, guys!

Salesforce.com

Screen Shot 2014-03-05 at 10.20.50 AM

It should come as no shock that Salesforce.com, currently ranked by Forbes as the most innovative in America, has a great responsive website. The Saleforce website breaks down its multitude of products, services and partnerships into informative blurbs, making the customer experience just that much more enjoyable.

Microsoft

Screen Shot 2014-03-05 at 10.24.17 AM

When you’re one of the largest software companies in the world, you had better have a great looking and functioning website. Microsoft’s website ticks all the boxes. As the company pushes into the tablet and mobile markets, it makes sense that they’ve adopted responsive design to better serve their users. We like how their website makes it easy to navigate between their products – such as Windows Phone, Microsoft Office, Skype – learn more about them and even purchase.

Food and Drink

Whole Foods

Screen Shot 2014-03-05 at 11.08.58 AM

As one of the largest health food stores, Whole Foods puts people and food right at the fore-front of their website. With their heavy emphasis on social, you actually feel like you are part of their community. Don’t forget to click the slide out menu to find healthy eating tips, read their corporate blog or find some yummy recipes. The “Brunch Basics” collect just makes our stomachs howl!

Starbucks

Starbucks Screenshot_Homepage

Like their signature white cup with green logo, the Starbucks website may seem plain, but once you’ve tried what’s inside, it’s nothing short of spectacular. For those looking to explore a “Venti” amount of information, the drop down menu is sure to measure up to your order. The extremely user-friendly and, frankly, cool content management and search features on the website make every user feel like they are brewed from the same blend.

Travel

Disney

Disney Screenshot_Homepage

With nine completely different enterprises, the Disney website can best be described as a beauty in design and a beast in regards to content. Aside from the bright colors and playful design, one element we love is the drop-down menu featured in the top-left corner on every page. It is super convenient and easy to use, and makes navigating the massive website a dream come true.

Z Ocean Hotel

ZOcean Hotel Screenshot_Homepage 1

An intimate boutique hotel on South Beach, the Z Ocean Hotel website is enticing. With a modern, simplistic design, the website invites users to experience a taste of the high-end, yet intimate beach atmosphere. From the seductive imagery to the invitation to “Discover Us,” the website feels intimate. Although simplistic in design, clickable content boxes featuring images of their suites, amenities and even a live webcam feed encourages users to delve deep into their potential stay. After all this DC snow, we are definitely itching for a little beach time.

Publishing

Dujour

Screen Shot 2014-03-05 at 11.29.21 AM

Although it is only online, DuJour Magazine’s website design feels like you’re flipping through an actual magazine. The homepage looks like a magazine cover and as you scroll down, you get a glimpse of the intriguing content available. A cool design feature is a menu bar that stays static as you scroll throughout the page. On the responsive site, we love the text overlay on the site’s stand-out photography.

Contents Magazine

Contents Magazine Screenshot_Homepage

The new school concept of Contents, an online magazine, along with the minimal website design, sets them apart from other online publishers. Though the tone of the site might seem conversational, the design conveys the articles as extremely personal. Author’s headshots in-line with and are as large as the actual headline. Only the best quotes or summaries are chosen, drawing you in and encouraging you to join the conversation.

BBC

BBC Screenshot_Homepage

Designed in the typical section style of an online news source, the BBC website sets itself apart with the use of photos. Set against a stark white background, the photos of varying size provide an extreme contrast that draws the users eye. With a running montage of photos and articles that users can click through, the BBC website design is tailored our increasingly digital and visual world.

Retail

A Book Apart

A Book Apart Screenshot_Homepage

Quite a unique website in purpose and content, A Book Apart publishes short books covering emerging topics in web design and development with style, clarity, and, above all, brevity. With pops of pink throughout the homepage to promote the newest addition to the book collection, the website has a fun, community feel perfect for people who make websites.

Salt Surf

Salt Surf Screenshot_Homepage

Speaking to the soul of a surfer, Salt Surf’s website is simple, yet elegant in design. The use of up close, black and white photography throughout the website truly embodies the ‘salt life’. We could spend hours just examining and absorbing the imagery on the homepage, look book, and blog but then we would miss out on time in the water.

Creative/Other

GE

GE screenshot

When your tagline is “Imagination at Work,” you have a responsibility to live up to the slogan. GE delivers with a beautifully crafted responsive website, which is aesthetically pleasing and intellectually stimulating. Our favorite feature is “Illustrating Imagination,” which takes quotes from the children of GE employees on what they believe their parents do at work and visualizes them into some stunning pictures.

These are Things

Screen Shot 2014-03-05 at 11.54.01 AM

These are Things is a small illustration studio and paper goods brand headquartered in Ohio. They produce awesome cartographic (interactive maps) and infographics. Unsurprisingly for creative professionals, their website is superbly designed with neat little animations and single scroll theme. We really love how the studio’s creativity and sense of humor is on display from the moment you reach their page.

Revolution in Sound

Revolution in Sound screenshot

Revolution in Sound is an interactive website hosted by Red Bull that maps out UK’s club and music culture. You can trace back the birth of music genres, famous club nights and classic artists across Britain. With Google + connectivity, users can contribute to the living archive of UK music by checking-in and commenting. Moreover, the sleek responsive interface makes it easy to find info on events, past and present, and all displayed in a extraordinary design.

How to Maximize SEO

You or your company can have the best-looking website in the world, but if no one sees it, your efforts are totally for naught. Most often, people with an interest in what you do will use a search engine like Google or Yahoo! to find the most appropriate websites to visit. Because the search engines deliver links to sites based in India as it is to see one in your town, it is critical that the search engine points the searcher to your website. That need has spawned a huge industry called Search Engine Optimization, or SEO. Here are some ways for you to improve your website’s position in the major search engines and maximize your SEO.

Instructions

  • Understanding that the major search engines continually attempt to provide their visitors with the best experience possible. Accordingly, they will rank your website based only on how well it matches up with its visitors subject of interest. They even track how visitors use you website, and either upgrade or downgrade your position based on that information.

  • Decide whether to improve your website’s search engine position by either buying advertising or improving your website, itself. Depending on how much you plan to spend for paid advertising, your website will appear more often to those people who have shown an interest in your content. Or else, you can make changes to your website that will make it more “friendly” to the major search engines, and that will result in your improving your position. In no case will your purchase of advertising sway the search engines to give your website preferential treatment.

  • Cosider hiring someone, either as a consultant or an employee, who can make changes to your website that will translate into better search engine positioning. This is a big decision and many experts can provide you with valuable services such as reviewing your website, recommending changes to it, developing content, improving your keyword search, and training your webmaster in other tricks of the trade.

  • Understand from the outset that there is no way to guarantee a high position on a major search engine. Some SEOs will say that they can influence search engines to improve your website’s ranking; but, in fact, improvement can only occur when you submit a better website to a search engine.

How to Protect Your Email From Info Snatchers

email monster

Are you using an email service like Gmail, Outlook, or Yahoo? Those so-called “free” services aren’t really free. In fact, they cost you plenty and you may not know it. Think about it. Why would a global corporation give you anything for free?

Email isn’t a product these companies are giving to you out of the kindness of their hearts.

The truth is that you’re the product. Email is the bait to lure you in to what is, in essence, a marketing research tool. They scan and store every email and attachment that passes through their servers. They do this to learn more about you, so they can make money by using or selling information about you. And of course, once these companies snatch your information, the government can get its hands on it, too.

Read the fine print in the terms of service and you may be shocked. (Let’s face it. Most of us don’t have time to read these kinds of documents and simply click “agree.”) For example, Yahoo states that it scans messages that pass through its servers and tells you why:

Yahoo scans email620y3

Mention your toenail fungus in a Yahoo email, and don’t be surprised when ads on websites you visit start touting a cure. If your accountant attaches your tax return and sends it through his Hotmail account, now Microsoft has it, too—along with your social security number, income, and more.

Think of the personal and sensitive information you share by email every day and what insights it gives into your hobbies, interests, politics, personal finances, education, friends, family and medical conditions. Do you really want companies like Google or its partners having access to things like emailed medical records, your travel plans, financial information, and messages to friends that should be kept private?

Even if this “trade” of information for services doesn’t bother you, consider the other people in your life, because your choice of email provider affects them, too. Just ask Benjamin Mako Hill, Acting Assistant Professor in the University of Washington Department of Communication in Seattle.

mako300

Hill had been running his own email server for many years, in part to protect his privacy. He wondered why some people who should know better about the privacy risks of using Gmail were using it anyway. One friend confided that he used it because if all your friends use Gmail, Google has the information anyway by virtue of the email exchanges passing through Gmail servers.

Hill got curious and found that his friend’s assertion was essentially true, and the results are documented at his blog in the article, “Google Has Most of My Email Because It Has All of Yours”. This points out how important it is for all of us to take a stand against email surveillance by choosing our email providers responsibly!

People have had excuses for using invasive services in the past. For example, the private email options weren’t very good or easy to implement, and using gold-standard Pretty Good Privacy (PGP) encryption was notoriously difficult, even for tech savvy consumers. But all this has changed.

startmail350

Fortunately, privacy-friendly email services like StartMail.com provide a way for everyone to follow Ed Snowden’s advice to use encryption. Encryption scrambles email messages so all those free email providers see is gobbledygook if they get a hold of it. For example, StartMail empowers users to encrypt their messages with PGP in just one click! In addition, StartMail does not mine customer data for marketing revenue, and never reads people’s messages. (Katherine helped develop StartMail, with privacy in mind!)

In order to protect our privacy we all must do our part to keep personal information out of the hands of marketers, and we encourage you to help take a stand against unbridled surveillance. Please adopt a privacy friendly email service to not only protect yourself, but the people you care about.

7 Awesome eCommerce Platforms For Small Businesses

The ‘click and order’ trend is undergoing a major shift.

As consumers increasingly turn to their PCs, smartphones, tablets, etc. to make buying decisions, small businesses are starting to realize the need to keep up with online operations to cope with the plunges and peaks of consumer demand. The solution?

An online store.

Take a minute to think about it now. Where would your customers shop after closing hours? What’s the one thing you could do to please customers? What’s the one step that you think would change everything?

Most successful businesses today sell products and services on the Internet. So you need to stop and consider all the possibilities before competitors take the lead.

Like any business model there are challenges to opening an online store, with the prime one being selecting the right eCommerce platform to launch your business.

Although the promise of saving money and time by hiring a developer to build an eCommerce site from scratch can be tempting, the reality is that they could end wasting a ton of both.

Luckily, there are powerful eCommerce platforms specifically designed to meet your needs – allowing you to increase sales and attract more customers. Whatever you sell, if you are running on a well-equipped eCommerce platform odds are there will be other businesses having the same needs, so new features and tools will be developed and available to you in a reasonable amount of time.

While there is no perfect platform and there will be tradeoff in picking one over another, I find the following seven provide more flexibility and a low barrier to entry to build an eCommerce store:

1. PrestaShop

prestashop

PrestaShop is a popular shopping cart software with great potential. It is designed to help businesses build a functioning web store and despite it boasting advanced features such as web 2.0 innovations, the platform is speedy, lightweight and easy to get acquainted with.

Some out-of-the box features offered by PrestaShop include catalog management, search engine optimization, responsive themes, promotional tools, multilingual shopping cart, recently viewed products option, payment extensions and international shipping. There’s also an official marketplace for additional add-ons to connect your online store to other platforms you use.

The best part of all this is that PrestaShop is free to use with no monthly or transaction fees. This makes it perfect for those who are just starting their online store and need to keep costs as low as possible until profits start rolling in.

2. BigCommerce

bigcommerce

BigCommerce assists small businesses in creating professional online stores so they can increase revenue. The all-in-one eCommece solution includes a secure shopping cart, website, marketing tools, and mobile themes. You also get advanced features such as product reviews, ‘you may also like’ suggestion, zoom, etc.

The design is 100 percent customizable, so a business can easily use its custom design without the BigCommerce branding/logo. BigCommerce’s customer service philosophy makes it easy for the user to get started: there’s a fold on the homepage reading ‘how can we help you.’ But you get all this in $24.95 a month.

3. Shopify

shopify

Shopify lets you choose from more than 100 designs to create your online store and add products. Websites are customizable and include a shopping cart compatible with American Express, VISA and MasterCard. A modern admin interface, build-in blog interface, and apps available for almost any advanced functionality, make Shopify a viable option.

Shopify merchants can also sell their products anywhere with Shopify Mobile (includes a build-in mobile credit card reader) and Shopify point-of-sale (works on the iPad). Pricing starts at $14 a month, but merchants have to pay transaction fees for hosting and other services.

4. Magento Community Edition

magento

Magento Community Edition allows small businesses to sell in online markets with no hassle on fulfillment, translations or pricing. A huge benefit of using Magento is that it can be easily integrated with marketplaces like Amazon and eBay, enabling users to easily manage their business from the back end.

The highlight of the Community version is that it’s extensible: it can be used to do almost anything you want in an online shop. While everything isn’t bundled in the default version, it’s either there in the extensions, or in the skills of the Magento contractors that can be hired at affordable rates.

5. WooCommerce

woothemes

WooCommerce is built on the back of WordPress blogging platform. It is fast and easy to manage, with great support and documentation. Small businesses using WordPress can easily install WooCommerce to get started. Because of this tight integration, it is recommended for businesses that envision content marketing to drive sales of their products and services.

It lets you set up a shop with lots of options including flat rate shipping, bundled PayPal and card payment options, physical product inventory, coupon campaigns and tax settings. There are no price tags associated with WooCommerce.

6. SpreeCommerce

spreecommerce

SpreeCommerce offers a full set of features and is built on common standards, so small business owners using this platform don’t have to forego speed to market, innovation or efficiency. The modular solution allows you to easily configure or replace any store functionality, so that you can build a storefront exactly to your specifications.

SpreeCommerce customers also get to use Wombat, the new automatic integration platform that connects a storefront to its backend operations. It intelligently routes product orders and data to ensure the right information is at the right place at the right time. It’s free to get started with SpreeCommerce.

7. Selz

selz

Selz offers simple ways to boost sales with an eCommerce store that offers a beautiful buying experience. You can start selling products quality without the need of all the bells and whistles of a full-blown eCommerce application.

The quick and easy eCommerce platform allows you to add products within minutes, and businesses don’t even require to have a website; you can get a web store with a custom domain, share the link and start selling. You can also use Selz widgets on your pre-existing blog or website as opposed to having a complete store. Selz also includes handy features such as shopping cart integration and responsive themes. Users can sign up for free, and only pay a fee of 5% + 25c when you make a sale.
